A cactus is a member of the Cactaceae plant family. There are about 2000 types of cacti that come in different shapes, sizes, and colors. And to you stun you with the fact; Cactus has been the resident of planet earth for 35 to 40 million years. Let’s dive in to know about cacti.
1. They are durable
You can’t kill a cactus until and unless you over water it or use the wrong compost. Unlike other plants, cacti do not hold water well and they need very good drainage. So if you want to keep your plant alive, use cactus compost only.
2. Is cactus a flowering plant?
Yes, cactus is a flowering plant but some have major blooms and there are few. Mammillaria, Gymnocalycium, and Parodia are some of the species that flower quite easily with vivid colors. Also, stop feeding it and cut the watering to at most once a month and keep it in a bright sunny area.
3. How to Hold?
Cacti have prickles which can harm you, so be cautious! Hold it carefully with thick gloves or folded paper to ring around the top.
4. What is their age?
Indoor cacti may live for 10 years or more whereas the wild cacti can live for hundreds of years. But when the plant gets older it looks less appealing.
5. Cactus grows slowly!
Cacti as an indoor plant or in wild can live for hundreds of years. But it grows very slowly! It nearly takes 10 years for cacti to reach one inch tall and 45 or more feet in 200 years.
6. How do cactus look like?
Cactus is cylindrical, rounded, irregular or starfish in shape. It is green, bluish or brown-green in color and has spines instead of leaves. Cactus has a waxy substance on the surface which prevents loss of water when the temperature is high.
