Indoor Air Quality means the quality of air within and around buildings and structures. People spend most of their time in their homes, schools, and work. Therefore, to maintain a healthy indoor air quality it is important to understand and control air pollutants to reduce the risk of health concerns.

Poor indoor air quality leads to headache, tiredness, coughing, sneezing, sinus congestion, dizziness, and nausea. It can even affect your skin, eyes, nose, or throat. This is generally caused because of indoor air pollution which is caused by pollutants.

Major Air Pollutants:

1. Biological Contaminants

Biological contaminants like Fungi, insects, dust, and pollens coming from both inside and outside the home can cause allergy.

2. Combustion By-products

Combustion By-products are the gases and small particles which are caused by the incomplete burning of fuels. This can happen due to the burning of oil, gas, kerosene, wood, coal, and propane.

3. Formaldehyde and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs)

Formaldehyde and other volatile organic compounds are the chemicals which are found in furnishings and plywood. Volatile organic compounds are also found in cleaning agents, paints, lacquers, and varnishes. These compounds are released from materials for several years.

4. Asbestos

Asbestos is used as a fire retardant. Although it does not cause any health risk but exposure to asbestos can cause lung cancer over time. This may be due to fraying and crumbling of fibers into the air.

How To Improve Indoor Air Quality:

Following are three ways to improve your indoor air quality:

1. Improve indoor air quality

Keep your house clean and dust-free. Block the way of animal dander and pollens to enter in your home. Clean the furnaces, ducts, filters regularly. Reduce the humidity from bathrooms, kitchens and clothes dryer by letting air vent form moist areas. You can also keep the fan open or let the nearby window open for the same. Avoid any sort of smoke inside your house as they may release harmful gases like carbon monoxide. Along with this, avoid keeping paints and other solvents in your home. Try to store them at a separate place. Also, do not mix the household cleaner and solvent together. This may create a new pollutant which can be dangerous.

2. Improve ventilation

Keep your home and surrounding well ventilated by letting the fresh air in. Especially during home renovations and cooking, keep the doors open so that moisture doesn’t block the way of fresh air. When the air in your home is not well circulated then there are high chances of poor indoor air quality. This may even lead to mold and mildew. Days when there the outdoor air quality is poor, limit the air for some time.

3. Use air cleaners

Air cleaners help in eliminating the harmful pollutants from entering your home and keep the air clean for breathing. They remove both the particles from the air and gaseous pollutants. When you are using an air cleaner read the manual carefully and use the types of equipment accordingly.
