South Korea has become the first country to launch 5G services. This was rolled out on 29th March 2019 with Samsung Electronics new launch. It is with the new 5G (fifth-generation)-enabled Smartphone Galaxy S10.
With this, South Korea is now in a race with China, the United States, and Japan.
Ryu Young-Sang, Executive Vice President at SK Telecom, said in an interview on 3rd April, “It is meaningful that South Korean telecom companies are providing services and networks meeting South Korean customer’s high standard in speed and picture quality”.
Post the launch, Verizon a telecom company announced that they will be coming up with 5G services in two cities. This is likely to scale up to more cities soon.
Verizon a telecom company also said in a statement that, “For the first time ever, customers can access a commercial 5G network with the world’s first commercially available 5G-enabled Smartphone.”
Telecoms and Media Company, AT&T Inc exclaimed that they are the first ones to launch 5G network in December 2018. They even said that the services were available to mobile hotspot devices but not on phones during December in 12 cities.
Talking about the 5G technology, it can offer 20-times faster data speed than the 4G network which can also be 100-times faster. It also has better support for artificial intelligence and virtual reality.
The first customers of 5G were K-pop stars and an Olympic gold medalist. This shows how much SK Telecom has spent on the marketing of 5G. They are even expecting the number of 5G customers to increase to one million by the end of 2019.
We hope this technology breakthrough in all the field and drive up the economic growth of the world.
